DrivePlan

New Zealand has some of the most stringent legislation around health and safety in the world, and motor fleet risk management is an important emerging issue for managers for societal, business, cost and legal reasons. Research suggests that the most successful way to reduce fleet accidents is to introduce a range of safety initiatives that become a continuous safety cycle to create a culture of safer driving within an organisation.

SurePlan in combination with NZ Car Safety have developed the DrivePlan program, which is designed to help fleets manage their risk, make fleets safer, reduce accident and accident related costs.

SurePlan can help you develop policies and systems that are specific to your business and that protect your staff and your fleet.

Your policies need to be clear to everyone in your organisation. They should recognise the importance of the safety of employees and identify the specific hazards in the business.

Safe driving and fleet safety policies should include:

  • A summary of the legislation
  • Requirements under the Health and Safety in employment Act 1993
  • Vehicle selection – safety features
  • A safe-driving pledge
  • Pre-employment procedures
  • Driver education and training
  • Incident reporting systems
  • Incident investigation procedures
  • General safety systems
  • How to use safety equipment

Driver education & training

Traditional driver training has generally meant a fun filled day out of the office at a race track where the main emphasis is on developing driving skills. There is however overwhelming evidence that argues that skills based driver training have failed to deliver proven benefit, and may in fact be counterproductive. This type of training often increases confidence, which means drivers can become less responsive to the inherent risks with being involved in skids and other such driving events. Put simply, increased driving skills, can increase risk taking in some drivers

To reduce fleet incident rates there needs to be a change in drivers behavior, drivers need to have a greater awareness of the risk they face; ensuring drivers choose to make good decision when behind the wheel.

In conjunction with Working Safe we have developed a web training tool which focuses on driver behavior and the choices drivers make.

The benefits of e-learning include:

  • This style of training and education is affordable and effective
  • You will no longer have people out of the office for the whole day on training
  • It removes the time consuming administrative task of trying to gather all your drivers in one place
  • Drivers are registered for a year and can do this training more than once, reinforcing fleet safety
  • Training can be done anywhere at any time, as long as you have internet access
  • It increases driver awareness to the risk they face and how talks about how to manage risk
  • This training is measurable providing training reports
  • The training course allows you to deliver a consistent training program nationally or even internationally
